If you run really wide wheels, you don't want the "spokes" all the way on the outside. Because that would leave the rim without enough support; it would bend more easily if it hit a bump or hole or something on the road. If you run really wide wheels, you are less likely to bend the wheel if the "support" was as close as possible to the middle - considering the proper offset for clearance and backspace for the calipers.Yes some wheels are design with big lips for looks only - and you know which ones those are. The more reputable makers run bigger "lips" because form follows function.
